Tian Han was born in Changsha, Hunan Province, in 1898. He studied literature at Peking University and later went to Japan to study drama. In 1922, he returned to China and founded the Nan Guo Drama Society, which was one of the first professional theatre companies in China.

Tian Han's early plays were mostly adaptations of Western classics, but he soon began to write original works that reflected the social and political issues of his time. His play Thunderstorm (1933) was a scathing indictment of the feudal system and its oppressive effects on women. Guan Hanqing (1935) was a historical drama about a famous Yuan Dynasty playwright who was persecuted for his progressive views.

In 1937, Tian Han joined the Communist Party of China. He continued to write plays and films that supported the Communist cause, and he also served as the head of the Chinese People's Liberation Army's Cultural Troupe during the Chinese Civil War.

After the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, Tian Han was appointed the first president of the Central Academy of Drama. He continued to write plays and films, and he also served as the chairman of the Chinese Dramatists' Association.

Tian Han's work has been praised for its realism, its powerful social commentary, and its lyrical beauty. He is considered one of the most important figures in modern Chinese theatre and cinema.
